Papalote Wind Farm

Electricity generated from the West Texas plains and Texas coastal wind farms makes CPS Energy the largest publicly owned purchaser of wind power in the country. We currently acquire more 859 megawatts (MW) of wind-generated electricity.

Most of our wind power comes from West Texas -- 341 MW from the Cottonwood Creek wind farm near Sweetwater and 161 MW from the Desert Sky wind farm near Iraan. In 2009, CPS Energy looked to breezes coming from the Gulf of Mexico for electrical generation. We began acquiring wind power from the Texas coast -- 130 MW from the Papalote Creek Wind Farm east of Corpus Christi, and 77 MW from Peñascal in Baffin Bay. Our newest wind farm, Cedro Hill in deep South Texas near Freer, offers an additional 150 MW of renewable power. Together, all of these wind farms are capable of generating electricity for roughly 200,000 homes. Combined with our efforts in solar power and other renewable projects, CPS Energy hopes to achieve 1,500 MW of renewable energy power, or 20 percent of our total generation capacity, by 2020.

Clean power in the form of wind energy is made available to CPS Energy's residential and commercial customers through Windtricity®, our voluntary renewable-energy purchase option.
