Coal -- An Abundant and Affordable Source of Power
For decades, coal has been an important source of fuel for CPS Energy. Our utility currently has three coal units that turn low-sulfur coal into electrical power for San Antonio.
Today, coal satisfies more than 38 percent of Greater San Antonio’s energy use. It is one of the most abundant fuel sources in the country and often is available at a lower, less volatile market price than many other fuel sources. At the J.K. Spruce 1 and 2 and Deely Power Plants, located on Calaveras Lake in south Bexar County, coal is used to produce more than 2,000 megawatts of affordable and reliable electrical power for Greater San Antonio.
