Safety Under the Sun Keeps Summer Fun

Cookouts, swimming pools and yard work are commonplace during the summer. However, the “Great Outdoors” should not be taken for granted. While electricity and natural gas make summer easier to enjoy, it’s also important to use common sense to avoid accidents that can ruin a summer vacation.

Keep these important and useful tips in mind this summer:

  • Use only electric equipment designed for outdoor use.
  • Keep ladders, kites, TV antennas, and sailing masts away from power lines.
  • Outdoor outlets should be protected by ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI). If you are not familiar with the GFCI, ask your appliance or hardware dealer. It's an easy-to-use safety device.
  • If you are getting ready to plant a garden, Call Before You Dig to locate underground power and gas lines by using the National One Call System at 811, IT'S THE LAW.
  • Never build a swimming pool or other structure under the power line leading to your house.
  • Never climb power poles, transmission towers, or fences around substations, and teach children to stay clear of all electrical and natural gas installations.
  • If you see a downed power line, call CPS Energy immediately at 353-HELP (4357). Warn others to stay away.
