CPS Energy Delivers Lean, Clean Energy to Local Manufacturers; Munters Receives $61,000 Rebate

12/21/2010

CPS Energy is delivering on its commitment to help manufacturers implement energy-efficiency programs that make business and operational practices more cost-effective and environmentally friendly. For one local company, that commitment came in the form of a $61,000 check.

Munters, a global leader in humidity and climate-control technologies, received more than $61,000 in CPS Energy commercial rebates for implementing energy-efficiency strategies. The rebates included $41,080 for a lighting retrofit project. As part of the Lean Clean Energy (LCE) Program, Munters fixed air leaks and installed energy-efficient lighting throughout its factory and office spaces.

Additionally, the company received significant rebates for installing a new dehumidification system and for participating in CPS Energy’s Demand Response curtailment program.

“Munters has taken a holistic approach to energy efficiency and, most importantly, is being an excellent environmental steward.  They have studied and applied lean process theory and practice in looking for and implementing energy efficiency and moved even further into the realm of reducing electric load when San Antonio needs electricity the most. Their example provides leadership to others in the San Antonio business community on walking the environmental steward talk,” said Bruce Evans, director of customer solutions and delivery.

"As an air-handling-unit supplier, Munters prides itself on developing state-of-the-art energy efficient products, and the programs offered by CPS Energy were a natural extension to our corporate goals," said Richard A. Long, vice president of global operations for Munters DH Division.

CPS Energy partners with the Texas Manufacturing Assistance Center (TMAC) of Southwest Research Institute to provide training, resources and tools to help manufacturers implement energy-efficiency changes. The program helps businesses build their own strategic energy plans and provides commercial energy-efficiency rebates.

“By taking advantage of the array of CPS Energy programs and incentives, Munters has shown how energy efficiency can reduce operating costs on an ongoing basis. Munters formed a capable team, collected the right data and invested in changes that make sense both operationally and financially.  Most importantly, they’ve committed to their program for the long-term and continue to make strides in energy performance.  TMAC is pleased to have been able to assist Munters and CPS Energy in their ongoing partnership,” said Carl Allsup, research engineer for TMAC.

Lean Clean Energy, which is part of CPS Energy’s Save for Tomorrow Energy Plan (STEP) initiative, has a goal of reducing 9 megawatts (MW) of electrical demand from local manufacturing sources by 2020.  STEP’s overall goal is to reduce growth in demand by 771 MW – the equivalent of a power plant – by 2020.

CPS Energy is the nation's largest municipally owned natural gas and electric utility, providing service to approximately 717,000 electric customers and 325,000 natural gas customers in and around the city of San Antonio. The utility ranks among the nation's lowest-cost energy providers while ranking number 1 in wind-energy capacity among municipally owned utilities.
