CPS Energy Warns Customers of Potential Fraudulent Calls

11/19/2010

CPS Energy is warning customers to be careful about the personal information they provide to callers following reports of fraudulent attempts to gain credit card information.

Two commercial CPS Energy customers reported receiving a phone call with the caller claiming to be a CPS Energy employee and stating a credit card number was needed in order to stop a pending disconnect. The caller was not a CPS Energy employee and the utility only accepts credit card payments through a third party. However, neither CPS Energy nor the third party will initiate a call to obtain a payment over the phone.

Customers who receive a call from individuals claiming they represent CPS Energy should not provide personal information such as a credit card number or bank account. The customer is also advised to report the call to the local police department.
