CPS Energy’s Windtricity® Business Partner Alamo Heights, Texas has been designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a Green Power Community. Green Power Communities are cities, towns, and villages in which the local government, businesses, and residents voluntarily buy green power in amounts that meet or exceed EPA's Green Power Community purchase requirements.
“The residents of Alamo Heights should be proud of the city’s achievement in being recognized as an EPA Green Power Community,” said John Saenz, CPS Energy’s vice-president of Retail Energy.
“Through this recognition, CPS Energy is also proud to be a partner with Alamo Heights in embracing renewable energy and recognizing the benefits that green power has on our environment.”
As a community, Alamo Heights is collectively purchasing 3.6 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually, which is enough to meet 3.34 percent of the community’s total electricity use. This amount of purchased wind power equates to the reduction of 20,139 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
“The City of Alamo Heights and its citizens are clearly supportive of renewable energy,” said Mayor Louis Cooper. “We value our relationship with CPS Energy and appreciate its efforts to provide its customers with a green power alternative.”
With this distinction, Alamo Heights becomes the third EPA Green Power Community in Texas and ranks as the 21st largest in the nation. Universal City and Helotes are the other two Texas communities to be recognized by the EPA as Green Power Communities.
Through its Windtricity® program, CPS Energy provides the purchase of wind-generated electricity for homes and businesses for an added cost on their monthly utility bills. CPS Energy assisted Alamo Heights by sending letters to residents, encouraging them to participate in becoming a Green Power Community by signing up for Windtricity®.
Today, there are more than 160 Alamo Heights residents and businesses that have joined the community effort and signed up for CPS Energy’s Windtricity®.
Green power is electricity that is generated from renewable resources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, biomass and low-impact hydro. These resources generate electricity with a net zero increase in greenhouse gas emissions. The EPA’s Green Power Partnership currently has more than 1,200 partner organizations nationwide. Together, they voluntarily purchase nearly 18 billion kWh of green power a year, equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions from electricity use of more than 1.6 million average American homes.
