The U.S Department of Energy (DOE) recently recognized CPS Energy along with Denton Municipal Electric as co-recipients of the 2011 Public Power Wind Award.  The tribute took place at the American Public Power Association’s (APPA) National Conference in Washington, D.C.  APPA members throughout the United States nominated a total of 17 utilities for the award. The recognition further emphasizes CPS Energy as a leader in promoting wind energy development.

“This award is great recognition of CPS Energy’s accomplishments over the past decade. Our Board set an ambitious goal for renewable energy, and our team is well on the way to accomplishing that goal,” said Mike Kotara, senior vice president of power generation for CPS Energy. “This recognition enhances our reputation as a leader in wind energy development.”

CPS Energy’s participation in renewable energy stems from its Vision 2020 plan to serve Greater San Antonio with a total of 1,500 megawatts (MW) of those resources by the year 2020. The utility’s diversified fuels portfolio includes 859 MW of wind generation through long-term purchase power agreements.  Moving forward, CPS Energy is enhancing its solar energy resources, which currently includes 44 MW of solar power under contract.
