CPS Energy Crews Work to Restore Storm-Related Outages

05/12/2011

As of 4:30 p.m., approximately 2,500 CPS Energy customers remain without power following a line of severe storms that moved through South Texas this morning. CPS Energy crews continue to work on restoring power as quickly as possible. As many as 12,000 customers experienced outages due to the storms.

Customers affected by outages are advised to:

  • Turn off electronic devices such as televisions, stereos, computers, printers to avoid sudden surges and spikes that could damage electrical devices when power is restored.
  • Turn off the air conditioning system – leaving it on could create an overload on the system when power is restored and create an additional outage.
  • Keep one light turned on to know when power has been restored.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to keep food cold longer.
  • Use caution with candles and generators, carefully placing them so as not to create a fire or carbon monoxide poisoning hazard.
    All residents are reminded to:
  • Stay away from downed power lines! Treat all wires as if they are “live” (energized). Report damaged power lines immediately by calling 911 and CPS Energy at 353-4327.
  • Use caution when driving, as traffic signals may be disrupted.

To report an outage, call 353-HELP (4357). To view a near real-time map of affected areas, visit cpsenergy.com and click on Power Outages.
