CPS Energy Encourages Conservation as Summer-Like Temperatures Rise

04/20/2011
Local Property Management Company Lauded for Efficiency Measures

CPS Energy today applauded the energy efficiency measures of a local property management company while reminding the greater San Antonio community of the importance of conservation as summer-like weather hovers over the area.

As part of its Save for Tomorrow Energy Plan (STEP), CPS Energy is continuously working toward its goal of reducing 771 megawatts (MW) of electricity by the year 2020. Through a robust rebate program, encouragement of programmable thermostats, and energy conservation messaging, the utility has saved a total of 252 MW to date.

The San Antonio-based Lynd Company has implemented several conservation strategies which could result in even more energy savings. At 19 of its local apartment complexes, the property management company instituted: Energy Star appliances, low-emittance double pane windows, additional insulation, energy-efficient lighting, and Energy Star-rated computers in the complex’s offices and business centers. In addition, the company worked with CPS Energy to place Peak Saver programmable thermostats in the complexes, which altogether comprise 5,500 individual units.

“Since our founding over 30 years ago, The Lynd Company has worked on innovating the living experience for its residents and improving results for its clients.  CPS Energy’s Peak Saver Program is a perfect example of this.  The Lynd Company properties, with the addition of the Peak Saver thermostats, give our residents a benefit usually limited to home owners.  We are proud to be the first company to install these on every apartment home and look forward to our continuing partnership with CPS Energy.  Our residents now benefit from reduced electricity bills and are able to help reduce the use of fossil fuels,” said Jeffrey Weissman, senior vice president of multifamily operations for the Lynd Company.

“With the impending summer weather and above-normal temperatures we are experiencing this spring, it’s important for everyone to plan wisely and put in place as many energy efficiency measures as possible to save energy and money. Customers can receive rebates for making a lot of these improvements,” said Kathe Doran, energy management manager, CPS Energy.

CPS Energy provided more than 17,000 rebates to customers in 2010. Rebates for products such as efficient appliances, roofs, insulation windows and air conditioners have made it possible for CPS Energy to see reductions in energy consumption since the STEP program began in 2008. Customers are encouraged to take the following steps to help the San Antonio area further reduce its carbon footprint as well as help CPS Energy reach its STEP goal while lowering their own energy use and costs at home or work:

  • Replace inefficient appliances, when possible, with energy saving models.
  • In warmer months, set the thermostat between 78 and 80 degrees while at home.
  • Repair leaks in the air duct system.
  • Add caulk, weather-stripping and foam gaskets to reduce air leaks.
  • Check the attic insulation. The recommended level of insulation for an attic in South Texas is R-30 to R-60.
  • Turn off the lights and ceiling fans when leaving a room or office, unplug electrical device chargers and other like items when not in use, and shut down computers and game systems when finished.
  • Install programmable thermostats to help manage air conditioner use.
  • Check air conditioner filters every month, and replace dirty filters.
  • Install solar screens and solar film on windows to reduce heat infiltration.
  • Plan for the long-term – plant trees that will provide shade and reduce energy use. The Green Shade Tree Rebate program is available until April 30, 2011.
