CPS Energy Ready for Winter Weather Conditions

02/03/2011
Customers Urged to Continue Conserving Energy

CPS Energy reminds customers to continue conserving energy as the utility prepares to handle any emergency that may arise from potential snowfall in South Texas. Bexar County remains under a Winter Weather Advisory with the possibility of up to two inches of snow accumulating overnight. Snow is not expected to have a significant impact on the availability of service.

To avoid potential outages from elevated energy use, customers are asked to be conscious of peak demand times. Efforts to conserve energy should be made from 6 to 9 a.m. and 6 to 10 p.m. until Saturday morning. Customers are advised to:

  • Set the thermostat between 65 to 68 degrees.
  • Use ceiling fans at lowest setting and in reverse mode to circulate warm air.
  • Limit use of appliances with high energy consumption, i.e. washing machines, dryers, dishwashers and water heaters.
  • Close air vents in unused rooms and shut doors.
  • Turn off electrical appliances and unplug chargers not in use.
  • Turn off portable electrical heaters and lights when not needed or in empty rooms.
  • Layer clothing to keep warm at home.
  • Seal any holes or gaps with towels or other material to keep out cold air and prevent heat from escaping. Make long-term repairs as soon as possible.
  • Use a surge protector to minimize impact to your electronics.

For 24-hour gas and electric emergencies, call 353-HELP (4357).
